What the PhD in Clinical Health Psychology means in practice:
A doctoral-level psychologist has completed a PhD or PsyD program — typically five to seven years of graduate training — plus a year-long predoctoral internship and, in most cases, additional postdoctoral training before licensure. The training includes coursework in psychological assessment, research methodology, and evidence-based treatment, along with thousands of supervised clinical hours.
The PhD specifically indicates a research-focused doctorate, which means my training included not just clinical application but understanding the evidence base: how the studies were designed, what populations they were tested in, where the limitations are. That background shapes how I apply evidence-based treatments, and how I personalize my approach.
Clinical Health Psychology specifically:
My specialty is at the intersection of psychological and physical health — the mechanisms by which stress, behavior, and emotional patterns affect physical functioning, and vice versa. Many of my clients aren’t dealing with anxiety or burnout in isolation; they’re dealing with what happens to the whole system when someone has been running at capacity for years.
It also means I understand the environments my clients work in from a clinical perspective. What a seventy-two-hour call rotation does to sleep architecture. What anticipatory anxiety before a trial actually looks like physiologically. What it costs cognitively to hold a company together while the funding environment shifts. These have specific clinical correlates, and treatment should account for them.
What this means for your care:
I don’t prescribe medication — if medication is clinically indicated, I can discuss it and refer. What I provide is a structured, evidence-based clinical process: a written case conceptualization before treatment begins, specific measurable goals, and regular progress reviews. If something isn’t working, we identify why and recalibrate.
